A Heartbreaker at Citi Field

Hello, fellow Mets fans 👋! Wow, what a rollercoaster that was last night against the Phillies. Definitely not the ending we were hoping for, but let's dive into it. Despite a valiant effort, our boys in blue and orange fell just short, with the Phillies taking it 5-4 in extra innings.

Early Innings - A Promising Start

The game started off as a tight pitcher's duel, with neither side giving up much. However, it didn't take long for the Mets to show some spark. In the bottom of the 2nd, Pete Alonso doubled to center and then J.D. Martinez drove him in with another double, tying the game at 1-1. Tomas Nido then came through with a clutch single to center, bringing in Martinez, pushing us into the lead. The energy in Citi Field was 🔥!

Building the Lead

By the 3rd inning, we extended our lead thanks to a bases-loaded walk by Martinez, making it 3-1. Unfortunately, even with the bases juiced, we couldn't add more runs, which in retrospect, was a chance we really needed to capitalize on. 🙁

Pitching Duel and Defensive Plays

Both teams' pitchers were dealing, and the defenses were flashing some leather. It was one of those games where every run felt like it would be crucial. Our guys, particularly Francisco Lindor, Alonso, and Martinez, kept battling at the plate, but those Phillies pitchers managed to keep us in check through the middle innings.

The Tense Late Innings

Jumping to the 7th inning, with the Mets up 3-2, our boys managed to scratch another run across thanks to an error by the Phillies' third baseman on a DJ Stewart fielder's choice, which brought Alonso home. 4-2 Mets, and oh, how we believed!

But baseball is a game of highs and lows. The 9th rolled around with the score still 4-2, our closer came in, and that's when things took a turn. A homer by Stott and a hit-by-pitch brought in the tying runs. We headed into extra innings, tied at 4-4, with every fan clutching their heart.

The 10th - A Tough Pill to Swallow

The top of the 10th was tough watching. The Phillies snagged the lead with a sac fly, making it 5-4. Our Mets battled in the bottom of the inning, but Philadelphia's closer was on his game, sealing the win for the Phillies.

Reflecting on the Game

While it's a bitter pill to swallow, there are positives to take from this game. Our guys showed grit and determination, battling back and making things tough for the Phillies every step of the way. Also, props to J.D. Martinez for his key hits and Tomas Nido for that early RBI.

Yes, it stings now, Mets family 😢, but we've seen what our team is capable of. Let's keep the faith and get ready to cheer them on in the next game. Here's to hoping we turn those close losses into wins! LGM! 🍎🧡💙
