Rockies Fall Short Against Cardinals 5-2

Despite a valiant effort, the Colorado Rockies couldn't rally enough to overcome the St. Louis Cardinals in a 5-2 loss. Our boys put up a fight, but missed opportunities and stellar plays from the Cardinals sealed our fate. Let's break it down inning by inning.

Early Defensive Battle

The first inning saw some solid defense from both sides. Charlie Blackmon got us off to a promising start with a single to center, but we couldn't capitalize as Ezequiel Tovar grounded into a double play and Brenton Doyle struck out swinging. The Cardinals also went scoreless in their half of the inning.

Rockies Trail Early

The Cards struck first in the 2nd inning with Thomas Saggese driving in a run. We had no answer in the bottom of the inning, with Ryan McMahon, Michael Toglia, and Sam Hilliard all failing to get on base. The third inning didn't start much better with Masyn Winn tripling and scoring on a sacrifice fly to put the Cards up 2-0.

Signs of Life in the 3rd Inning

Finally, the Rockies showed some life in the bottom of the 3rd. Jacob Stallings and Nolan Jones got on base, setting up Aaron Schunk to drive in a run. However, a double play ended our momentum, and we found ourselves down 2-1.

Missed Opportunities Haunt Rockies

The Cardinals kept the pressure on, scoring in each of the third and fourth innings. Our offense struggled to respond, and we couldn't bring any runners home in the 4th, 5th, or 6th innings despite a few getting on base. By the middle of the 6th, the score was 5-1 in favor of the Cardinals.

Late Push in the 9th

The game seemed all but over, but Brenton Doyle gave us a spark with a solo homer in the bottom of the 9th! 🎉 Sadly, the rally was cut short when Hilliard grounded into a double play to end the game.

Final Thoughts

Although the Rockies fell 5-2, there were still some positives to take away. Charlie Blackmon, Nolan Jones, and Jacob Stallings had good nights at the plate, and Brenton Doyle's homer surely electrified Coors Field. Let's look forward to the next game and hope our boys can bounce back stronger! 💪⚾
