A Tough Day for the Cubbies
Well, fellow Cubs fans, today's matchup against the Twins was not what we hoped for. The Twins played to their strength and kept us on the defensive all game long, ultimately defeating us 8-1. While it’s tough to see our Cubbies on the losing end, let’s break down what happened on the field today.
Struggling Offense Early On
In the top of the first, our lineup struggled to get things going. Ian Happ started by flying out, followed by Kyle Tucker striking out swinging. Seiya Suzuki managed to work a walk, but Pete Crow-Armstrong couldn’t capitalize and struck out. The early innings saw more of the same, with our bats staying quiet. Only Dansby Swanson managed to break through with a single in the second, but no further runs came from that opportunity.Twins Take Control
The Twins didn't waste any time. In the bottom of the first, Byron Buxton and Ryan Jeffers were quick to put the Twins ahead with consecutive doubles. After that, they kept the pressure on, eventually launching a massive rally during the bottom of the eighth which was heart-breaking to watch. Jeffers, Willi Castro, and Harrison Bader all contributed with home runs that effectively dashed our hopes for a comeback.
A Glimmer of Hope
Late in the game, Justin Turner gave us something to cheer about in the top of the ninth with a solo home run, our only run of the game. Nico Hoerner also singled after Turner’s home run, but that was all from us as Matt Shaw grounded into a double play to end it. Despite the lopsided score, Turner's homer was a little moment of sunshine, reminding us of the potential still there in the squad.
Let's shake off today's loss and cheer on our guys as they look to bounce back in the next game. Go Cubs Go!
