The first two innings were a tight affair with both teams unable to get on the board. Hats off to the pitchers for keeping it scoreless! Nico Hoerner, Michael Busch, and Seiya Suzuki couldn't get past the Cardinals' defense in the first, while our own pitchers returned the favor by retiring the side quickly.Breaking the Deadlock
Things started heating up in the 3rd inning. Miles Mastrobuoni and Pete Crow-Armstrong got on base with some savvy hitting. Hoerner grounded out but brought Mastrobuoni home, putting the Cubs ahead 1-0.Building the Lead
The 4th inning saw Ian Happ hitting a double, followed by a crucial RBI single from Dansby Swanson to make it 2-0 Cubs. Our defense stayed impenetrable, not allowing the Cardinals a sniff at home plate.Securing the Win
In the 7th inning, Mastrobuoni got things started again with a single, and Hoerner drove him in with a sacrifice fly for a 3-0 lead. The 8th inning brought some excitement as Christopher Morel and Swanson nailed back-to-back hits, and David Bote came in clutch with a double that drove home both runners, pushing our lead to 5-0.Closing it Out
The Cardinals tried to mount a comeback in the 9th inning, managing a single run thanks to Paul Goldschmidt. But Mark Leiter Jr. and Jimmy Neris held their ground and sealed the win, striking out the final batter to end it 5-1 Cubs!
Final Thoughts
This was a fantastic team effort. From Hoerner's key RBIs to Swanson's multiple hits, everyone contributed to this win. The pitching staff was lights-out, and the defense played flawlessly. Let’s carry this momentum forward! GO CUBS GO!
