Game Recap: Cubs' Dramatic Win Over Cardinals!
Hello Cubbies fans! What a thrilling game we had at Wrigley Field today! The Chicago Cubs edged out the St. Louis Cardinals in a nail-biting 5-4 victory. Let's dive into the action-packed game that had all of us on the edge of our seats.
Early Game Struggles
It wasn’t the best start for our Cubbies as the Cardinals' Paul Goldschmidt homered to center in the first inning, giving the Cards a 1-0 lead. The Cubs' hitters struggled initially, with Ian Happ, Michael Busch, and Seiya Suzuki all going down without much fight in the first inning.
In the bottom of the 2nd, Cody Bellinger finally got things rolling with a double, followed by singles from Nico Hoerner and Dansby Swanson, tying the game 1-1 as Bellinger scored.
Middle Innings and a Suzuki Blast
Both teams kept it tight and the score remained tied until the 6th inning. That's when Suzuki stepped up and sent a rocket to center field, a massive 459-foot homer to put the Cubs ahead 2-1. We all were buzzing with excitement!
However, the top of the 7th saw the Cardinals strike back hard. Masyn Winn homered to left, bringing in Michael Siani, and followed by Nolan Arenado's single that drove in Goldschmidt. Suddenly, we were down 4-2.
Seventh Inning Stretch to the Bottom of the 9th
Despite the Cardinals' lead, our pitching held firm. López and Pearson kept the Cards at bay through the 8th innings, giving us a chance to stage a comeback. But the bottom of the 8th didn't help our cause, even with David Bote hitting for Amaya. We still trailed 2-4.
Moving into the bottom of the 9th, we were all holding our breath. Helsley replaced Romero for the Cardinals, causing nervous chills. But then came Bellinger with a clutch home run, narrowing it to 4-3. The hopes of a dramatic comeback were alive!
Hoerner continued our rally, singling to center and stealing second. Swanson—our hero today—doubled, allowing Hoerner to score and tie the game at 4-4. Enter the pinch hitter Mike Tauchman. With a beautiful double to left, he sent Swanson home, securing the 5-4 victory for our Cubbies!
Conclusion and Celebration!
What a game—what a win! From Suzuki's thunderous homer to Tauchman's walk-off double, it was truly a show of resilience and heart from our Chicago Cubs.
Final Score: Cubs 5, Cardinals 4.
