Heartbreaker in Miami
Hey Cardinals Nation, what a rollercoaster of a game!
We went up against the Miami Marlins and despite an explosive start, we couldn't close it out in extra innings, losing 9-8. Let's break it down.Explosive First Inning
We kicked things off strong with Paul Goldschmidt blasting a two-run homer to right field after Alec Burleson capitalized on a fielding error. Suddenly, we were up 2-0! But the Marlins answered back quickly with a three-run homer from Jesus Sanchez, putting them ahead 3-2 by the end of the first.
Fighting Back in the 2nd and 3rd Inning
Brendan Donovan showed his power in the second inning with a two-run homer, putting us back in the lead at 4-3. In the 3rd, Ivan Herrera and Michael Siani added RBIs, taking us to a strong lead of 6-4. By now, we were feeling confident!
Mid-Game Jabs
In the 4th inning, Alec Burleson hit another solo homer, stretching our lead to 7-4. But the Marlins were relentless, clawing back to 7-5 by the end of the 4th. Their persistence paid off, tying the game at 7-7 by the 6th inning. Ouch!
Tension in the 9th Inning
Both teams were locked in a stalemate through the 7th and 8th innings. We couldn't believe it when the Marlins struck out three times in the 8th, holding the tie. At the top of the 9th, even as Jose Fermín replaced Matt Carpenter, we couldn't break the deadlock.
Extra Inning Drama
In the 10th inning, Dylan Carlson gave us a glimmer of hope with a sac fly, bringing Fermín home to make it 8-7!
But the bottom of the 10th was heartbreak city. The Marlins' Vidal Brujan, pinch-hitting for Bethancourt, knocked in the winning run, ending the game at 9-8.Final Thoughts
Despite the disappointing finish, we had some remarkable performances today with homers from Goldschmidt, Donovan, and Burleson. We'll have to brush this one off and come back stronger. Keep the faith, Cardinals fans! We'll get them next time!
