Nationals Fall Short in Late Rally Against the Padres

Hey Nats fans! 😥 We had a tough game against the Padres tonight, ending with a final score of 8-5. It's a bit of a heartbreaker after that promising rally in the 9th inning. Let's break it down.

Quiet Start for the Nats

We started off a bit slow. In the first inning, CJ Abrams flied out, Lane Thomas got walked, but then Jesse Winker struck out swinging and Thomas got caught stealing second. Our bats couldn't find their rhythm as Joey Meneses, Luis García Jr., and Harold Ramírez all struck out in the 2nd inning without moving the needle on the scoreboard.

Padres Get Ahead Early

Our pitching struggled a bit tonight. In the bottom of the 2nd inning, Padres' Kyle Higashioka hit a two-run homer, setting the tone early. The tough break continued into the 4th inning where the Padres added two more runs thanks to a wild pitch and a single from Jurickson Profar.

Nats Struggle to Answer

Despite our best efforts, we couldn't get much going until the 9th inning. We saw glimmers with walks and singles here and there, but nothing materialized into runs. The Padres capitalized on every mistake, and Kyle Higashioka hit his second homer of the night in the 8th inning, extending their lead to an intimidating 8-0.

Ninth Inning Rally!

Then came the 9th inning, and boy did we finally wake up! Jacob Young started us off with a walk, and Nasim Nuñez singled. Lane Thomas doubled, bringing in two runs immediately. Following that, Ildemaro Vargas was subbed in and flied out, but Joey Meneses was hit by a pitch, which set the stage for Luis García Jr. to double and bring in two more runs! Harold Ramírez kept the rally going with an RBI single, bringing us within three runs!

Closing Out the Game

Unfortunately, the rally ended with Nick Senzel grounding into a double play. It was a nail-biting finish but ultimately, it just wasn’t enough to overcome the Padres' lead.

Despite the loss, it was great to see some late-game fight from our guys. On to the next one! Keep your heads up, Nats fans! ⚾🚀
