The game started off with the Reds' TJ Friedl hitting a solo homer to put them on the scoreboard 1-0 in the first inning. Things seemed a bit quiet for our Padres initially, especially as our first three batters grounded out one by one. The Reds continued to add pressure with Elly De La Cruz scoring Friedl in the 3rd inning, extending their lead to 2-0. The situation looked a bit shaky when Austin Hays added another run with a solo homer in the 6th inning. In the bottom of the 6th inning, Fernando Tatis Jr. kicked things off with a crucial single followed by a stolen base. It was our very own Gavin Sheets who put us on the board with a double that allowed Tatis Jr. to score, making it 3-1. Ramon Laureano continued to battle with a solid walk, setting the stage for Jackson Merrill to triple to right field, bringing both Sheets and Laureano home. Just like that, the crowd erupted as we tied the game at 3-3.
Extra Innings Drama
Both teams’ defenses held the line until we approached the bottom of the 10th inning, tied 3-3. With the tension at its peak, a sensational play by Jake Cronenworth after a confusing error by the Reds' pitcher moved him to third base. Then, with nerves of steel, Tatis Jr. executed a perfect sacrifice fly to left, allowing Cronenworth to score, sealing the victory for us at 4-3!
